MHC Molecules: Structure and Genetics

ثبت نشده
چکیده

BIG PICTURE: T cells are a critical player in the adaptative immune system, but unlike B cells whose B Cell Receptor (BCR) can interact with soluble antigen, the T cell can only see antigen in the form of short peptides that has been processed and displayed on the cell surface bound to MHC Class I and Class II molecules. Each TCR is clonotypic meaning that it has undergone the process of positive and negative selection in the thymus, and the TCR is now programmed to recognize: [1] a specific non-self peptide in the [2] context (or orientation) of a [3] specific MHC molecule (MHC restricted). Clearly, the MHC:peptide complex is as critical to adaptative immunity as is the TCR. And likewise, it is important to understand the genes, structure, and cell biology of the MHC to understand its function, and how polymorphisms in MHC molecules impact the overall creation and diversity of the immune system.

Simulation of Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) Structure and Peptide Loading into an MHC Binding Pocket with Teachers’Hands

Molecular understanding of three-dimensional (3D) peptide: MHC models require both basic knowledge of computational modeling and skilled visual perception, which are not possessed by all students. The present model aims to simulate MHC molecular structure with the hands and make a profound impression on the students.

An asymmetric model of heterozygote advantage at major histocompatibility complex genes: degenerate pathogen recognition and intersection advantage.

We characterize the function of MHC molecules by the sets of pathogens that they recognize, which we call their "recognition sets." Two features of the MHC-pathogen interaction may be important to the theory of polymorphism construction at MHC loci: First, there may be a large degree of overlap, or degeneracy, among the recognition sets of MHC molecules. Second, when infected with a pathogen, a...

Isolation and characterization of cDNA clones for chicken major histocompatibility complex class II molecules.

The chicken major histocompatibility complex (MHC), the B complex, is being intensively analysed at the DNA level. To further probe the molecular structure of chicken MHC class II genes, cDNA clones coding for chicken MHC class II (B-L) beta chain molecules were isolated from an inbred G-B2 Leghorn chicken spleen and liver. Twenty-nine cDNA clones were isolated from the spleen and eight cDNA cl...

A Case of Probable MHC Class II Deficiency with Disseminated BCGitis

Major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II deficiency is a primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by abnormality of MHC class II molecules surface expression on peripheral blood lymphocytes and monocytes. Clinical manifestations include extreme susceptibility to viral, bacterial, and fungal infections but the immunodeficiency is not as severe as SCID (severe combined immunodeficien...

'Ovar-Mhc' - ovine major histocompatibility complex: structure and gene polymorphisms.

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) in sheep, Ovar-Mhc, is poorly characterised, when compared to other domestic animals. However, its basic structure is similar to that of other mammals, comprising class I, II and III regions. Currently, there is evidence for the existence of four class I loci. The class II region is better characterised, with evidence of one DRA, four DRB (one coding a...
